I kind of love how easy it is to avoid everybody in this huge house. For the rest of the evening it’s just been him and me.

My mom, though I love her, is somebody else’s problem right now. And if Preston has a shred of good in him, he’ll get her back to her doctor or back on her meds like I have been trying and failing to do for the last year.

Our deal is crazy, but these hours alone with him, watching TV or reading separately, are starting to remind me how much I needed time to myself. Time spent worrying about me, and nobody else.

Ransom lets me change into my PJs without watching, but he waits in the doorway, facing the other way. “Your room or mine?” he asks, almost businesslike. I let out a sigh.

“Whichever.”

The thought of sharing a big bed with him doesn’t bother me, as long as he honors his part of the agreement and doesn’t wake me up that way again.

“Mine, then. No offense,” he says, “but this room is very pink.”

“I’m incredibly offended,” I say, deadpan, and follow him down the hall all the way to his bedroom. My insides are flipping at the thought of lying beside him, and I have to squash that feeling way, way down. It’s not him I’m interested in at all. It’s his goddamn body. It’s his soapy, post-shower scent. I’ll be fine as soon as I’m lying down with my eyes firmly shut, thinking about all the studying and all the homework I could have done but haven’t.

A few minutes later and we’re lying side by side. He switches off his nightlight and, to my surprise, he leans over in the dark and kisses my cheek with a smirk. “Night.”

“You confuse me,” I whisper. He doesn’t answer, and I feel him turn onto his side.

It takes a long time, but the rhythmic sound of his breathing seems to help me turn my brain off, and I fall into a deep sleep.

Then, visions of his cousin’s empty, dark eyes. The lakehouse floorboards filling up fast with thick rivulets of blood.

His little smile at the courthouse.

I wake up, breathing hard, shaking, and it takes me a moment to realize the thick, muscular arms gently wrapped around my shoulders.

“It was a dream,” Ransom says against my ear. “Spencer isn’t here.”

“What?” I whisper back, still shivering. The room, though dark, slowly comes back into focus.

“He’s not here. It was a dream.”

After a long silence, I let my muscles relax, and I sink into him. He doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to pull his arms away. He might already be asleep again. I try not to let myself be confused by what just happened, and turn to tuck my head against his arm, breathing him in, before I wriggle back to my own side of the bed.

It seems like it was me that encroached in his space; he was only an inch away from the edge on this California King.
